When you go Smallmouth Bass, they can be caught using virtually the same tactics as when fishing for trout, in the moving waters of the rivers and streams. By any standards, this is a really enjoyable method of catching the hard fighting Smallmouth Bass.

Using the rivers and streams for Smallmouth Bass fishing, is going to be a day of roving the banks, with as little fishing gear as possible. You will need just the bare essentials, spare line, spare hooks, barrel weights and split shots.

What will you use for your Smallmouth Bass fishing? Well natural baits like worms or larvae will always produce fish. They will eat most things that come their way, even small animals and birds that make mistakes.

Don't forget, that although you are not carrying lots of stuff with you, you still need to have something to carry it in! Pockets are really only second best when compared with a bait box or bait bag. Keeping things all in one place, means you spend more time actually Smallmouth Bass fishing and less time, 'fishing' for pieces of tackle.

Freelining the bait along a swim (using just the weight of the bait) , into all the nooks and crannies where you think a specimen Smallmouth Bass is waiting, has to be fishing at it's purest and most natural.

Fly fishing for Smallmouth Bass, is another classic way of tempting this much sort after game fish!

Each area has it's favorit pattern of fly at any particular time, but generally speaking, the last two or three hours of a day, is the prime time to use a fly fish for the Smallmouth Bass fishing. This is the time of day, when most times you will see a lot of surface activity, both from the fish and other water life. With this in mind, if at all possible, try to be on the water during this high active time frame, the rewards will be worth it.

During long hot spells, Smallmouth Bass fishing in lakes, can sometimes go downhill and become neutral, this is the time to have a try at the smaller streams, which you may find are not at all affected by the hot sunny days.

James Henshall, a Cincinnati physician who liked his fishing, promoted Smallmouth Bass fishing, known back then as "black bass"

"As a food fish, there are few, if any, more palatable freshwater fishes, its flesh being firm, white, and flaky, and when cooked, nutty, tender, and juicy; it has few bones and little offal, and as a pan fish is unexcelled. Its game qualities are second to none, and it will thrive and multiply in waters where the trout can not exist."

In some places where there numbers of Smallmouth Bass are not high, they are classed as a sport fish only!

Rivers streams and lakes which are clear and rocky and are suitable for trout, with a water temperature which is too high for trout, are good places for Smallmouth Bass fishing.

Smallmouth Bass are not found too often in waters that are excessively warm, over 80'F , or below 60'F , this being too cool for them to thrive.
