Largemouth
Bass are originally a native
American species of game fish, found in a large
number of rivers and lakes found to the east
side of the Rocky
Mountains!
..
Largemouth Bass are found almost
anywhere where there is water. It prefers warm, mostly
clear water, and because it is mainly
a 'sight
feeder' the Largemouth
is less tolerant of colored turgid water than some of
it's cousins. They can even be found in river estuaries
because of their tolerance of mild saline
water.
.
The fish we know as Largemouth Bass
is not really a Bass at all, it actually belongs to the
Sunfish family of fishes but it looks similar to the
Striped Bass, so the name has
stuck.
.
At the time of writing the official
record weight of a true mouth
hooked Largemouth Bass
is 22lbs 4oz (10kg 113g). This superb fish was caught
by George Perry at Montgomery Lake in Telfair County,
Georgia, on June 2,
1932.
.
Today Largemouth Bass can be found in
many other locations, as an introduced
species. Mexico
is a prime example of the
introduction of Largemouth Bass, as they are found
throughout the entire
country.
.
As Largemouth Bass grow bigger, they
become almost exclusively predatory, hunting down
virtually anything that will fit into their rather
large
mouths.
.
When it comes to diet, anything goes!
Fish of any species including juvenile Largemouth Bass
are the main quarry of this hard fighting predatory
game fish.
.
Largemouth Bass will also take
anything else that is unfortunate enough to cross their
path, frogs, toads and crayfish are known to be at
least a small part of their
diet.
..
Largemouth Bass are also known to
take small birds, rats, and
mice, in fact if it
fits in that mouth, it will be
eaten!
..
Largemouth Bass spawn in shallow
lakes and ponds mostly in the spring, when the water
temperatures reach 60°F and
above.
..
Usually the
larger fish spawn first using the deeper water,
sometimes even as deep as
8mtrs.
..
..
A
million eggs can be laid during a season by the
female Largemouth Bass. She will lay these eggs
in a shallow depression (nest) that the male
forms in the lake or river
bottom.
..
Her mate makes the depression by
repeatedly passing over the chosen spot, moving away
any mud and stones with the force produced by his tail
(known as fanning out). .
The male Largemouth will then 'stand
guard' over the eggs and then the hatched fry, driving
off any likely predators that may venture too close to
the nest site. After about one month, the young fish
reach about one inch long and then the school breaks up
and a few of them will become adult
fish.
.
Throughout the country, time and
again anglers say that
the
Largemouth Bass is their
preferred quarry, it is looked
on as the #top predator and so commands a lot of
respect from
them.
.
Largemouth Bass are caught using
fishing lures such as plastic worm,
crankbait, spinners and live
baits.
..
Whichever type of bait you use,
artificial bait or live bait there are several
different techniques for each method. s time goes by
you may even develop your own 'killer' way of catching
these
fish.
.
As an angler, most of the Largemouth
Bass you will catch, will be from 1lb up to 3lbs. If
you are lucky or skillful enough to catch one around
8lbs, boy you will have had a great day on the
water.
.
It will give you bragging rites
amongst your jealous fishing
friends.
If you catch a double figure (over
ten pounds) Loudmouth Bass, you are going to be 'king'
for years to
come.
..
If you do catch a Largemouth over
5lbs, it will most certainly be a female fish, as 5lbs
is about the upper limit of the size of a male
fish.
.
Fish reach large sizes more quickly
in the southern states when compared with the more
northern states. This is due to the longer periods of
warmer weather you get, the farther south you
go!
